Is sugar or simple syrup better in an Old Fashioned? ›

The best old fashioned recipes call for sugar to balance the alcohol. I use simple syrup, which quickly dissolves and is simple to make. It also allows us to play around and use brown sugar instead of white sugar for the syrup, giving our co*cktail a caramel-like flavor that works well with whiskey or rum.

What's the best way to drink Glenlivet? ›

The simplest way to drink whisky as a beginner is to try it neat, cleansing your palate after each sip with a little cool water. You can also add a few drops of water into the whisky directly. This helps open up the flavours of the spirit while also reducing whisky burn. Just don't add too much water at once!

Should Glenlivet be refrigerated? ›

There is no reason to store malts at low temperatures, and every reason to avoid chilling them or adding ice. Cold numbs the tongue and represses the aroma. Ice also brings about changes in the malt. Whisky most fully expresses itself if it is stored and served at room temperature.

What bitters to use in Old Fashioned? ›

I recommend a high-proof bourbon with bold flavor notes, so that its flavor will not be overpowered by the orange and bitters. Bitters: Angostura bitters are most commonly used in this co*cktail. I generally add about 3 to 4 shakes, but feel free to add as many as you prefer.

How many drops of bitters are Old Fashioned? ›

Not Too Much Bitters

Made by concentrating the flavors of spices and bitter tree bark in alcohol, bitters are a classic co*cktail ingredient and necessary for a good Old Fashioned. A little goes a long way. Add 2-3 drops and your Old Fashioned will have much more depth and complexity.

Are you supposed to muddle the orange in an Old Fashioned? ›

Of all the additions to the Old Fashioned over the years, the orange peel has become the most welcome. However, it's also best not to add an entire orange slide and muddle it in the glass. Instead, use only a portion of the peel, shaved off the fruit with as little pith as possible, as your garnish.

What whiskey do bars use for Old Fashioned? ›

Best Overall Bourbon for an Old Fashioned: Old Grand Dad 114

Orange zest, cinnamon, and burnt sugar are the signature tasting notes of Old Grand Dad 114 Proof . A few drops of water and muddled sugar help dial down the heat to form a co*cktail as accessible as it is memorable.

With that said, bourbon is often the go-to whiskey choice for an Old Fashioned. The relatively heavy body of the mostly corn-based spirit creates structure within the co*cktail, and its natural sweetness helps counterbalance the more astringent elements of bitters.
