Did you know that KitKat filling is made from broken KitKats?! (2024)

Kitception.

I was today years old when I found out that my all-time favourite chocolate bar – the never-disappointing KitKat – was actually filled with hundreds of thousands of tiny little smashed KitKats.

Yep, that’s right, when you take a big bite of that crisp, wafer-layered goodness, you’re actually consuming broken KitKats, that were once KitKats, filled with broken KitKats, that were also once KitKats.

Confused? Let me explain.

Recently, a clip from 2015 BBC documentary series, Inside the Factory, resurfaced on social media. In it, the host visits a Nestlé factory in York, England, to take a peek at how KitKat bars are made. As the team traverses the factory floor, we spot an employee picking out the broken and damaged bars, before throwing them into a blue bucket.

The host asks: “What happens to all the ones you’re throwing away?”

And the response is that the rejected bars go on to be used as “fillings for the wafer”.

Mind. Blown.

Head of Marketing at Nestlé Australia, Joyce Tan, confirmed this sweet little tidbit to news.com.au, saying that chocolate and wafer pieces are “mixed together with other ingredients to create a delicious praline used between the wafers in KitKat bars.

“It’s both scrumptious and eliminates the waste during KitKat production.”

After announcing a commitment to more environmentally-friendly practices earlier in the year, I didn’t think I could love this snappy little snack any more than I already did – but now that I know KitKat has been doing zero waste since before it was cool?

I think it’s time to have a break.
