5 4 Coffee Break DOTHAN EAGLE THURSDAY, JULY 16 Prevent Lyme disease by avoiding tick environments Dear Doctor A young pop singer who battled Lyme disease was recently on the cover of People magazine. I know it's silly, but if a celebrity can get a disease, I feel I'm more vulnerable. What should I do to protect myself and my family? Dear Reader: Lyme disease is a serious illness that can have lasting effects. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to protect yourself. Lyme disease is an infection caused by bacteria that live inside insects (primarily deer ticks).
When the ticks bite us, the bacteria enter our bodies. Deer ticks are very small, about the size of a poppy seed. The first symptom of Lyme disease is a rash that spreads from the site of the tick bite. The rash looks like a bull'seye. In the center is a red spot where the bite was, then a pale area around that spot.
Outside of that, a wavy red circle grows larger with time. Other early symptoms can include fever, muscle and joint aches, fatigue, headache and a severe stiff neck. In the days to weeks after. the tick bite, Lyme disease can Bridge BY PHILIP ALDER North 07-16-15 ARE 10 85 West East 9 8 6 5 3 2 A7 4 3 8 10 7 6 3 9 2 3 AJ 10 9 74 2 South 10 9 5 A 8 6 Dealer: North Vulnerable: Both South West North East 20 2 Pass All Pass Opening lead: 3 Jo Brand, an English comedian, writer and TV personality, said, "My preference is swimming in the sea. I find the sea is more liberating, wild and good fun, rather than plodding up and down a pool." There is a preference signal in bridge that sometimes makes a player feel like he is flailing in a heavy surf.
This week we are showing him how to swim safely ashore. Sometimes, though, two good plays are required as in today's deal. Look at the North and East hands. South is in four hearts. West leads the club three.
How should East plan the defense? South has a minimum for his twoheart response; and remember that it guarantees at least a five-card suit. With only four hearts, South would make a negative double and hope for the best. Based on the point-count, East should realize that his partner has nothing. East must hope that his partner has led a singleton. So, East wins with his club ace and returns the club jack, his highest asking for a shift to spades, the higher-ranking of the other two side suits.
But after West ruffs at trick two and returns the spade nine to East's ace, what does East do next? East should lead a low club. When South covers with his eight, West will be forced to ruff with the heart four, which promotes East's queen as the setting trick. Brilliant! Note finally that even if West unexpectedly holds the diamond king, declarer would win a trick-four diamond switch with his ace, draw trumps, and discard his diamond losers on dummy's spade winners. If the tick is swollen, or if you develop a rash at the site of your tick bite, see your doctor for treatment. And if you've been in an environment that could have exposed you to ticks, and a rash develops that looks anything like what I've described, contact your doctor even if you never saw a tick.
