Sabina Nessa's killer Koci Selamaj admits stabbing a prison officer (2024)

The garage worker who murdered school teacher Sabina Nessa as she walked through a park admits stabbing prison officer with a piece of porcelain just a year into his life sentence.

Koci Selamaj was sentenced to 36 years for the sexually motivated murder of the 28-year-old school teacher, who he targetedas she walked alone through Cator Park in south-east London, in September 2021.

The killing sparked outrage from campaigners and politicians, who said there was an 'epidemic' of violence against women following a spate of high-profile femicides as the 'say her name' hashtag trended on social media.

And it later emerged that the police were warned about Selamaj three days before he murdered the innocent primary school teacher.

The Albanian national has now admitted to attacking two prison officers just a year into his sentence which began in April, 2022.

Selamaj was being held at HMP Frankland when he stabbed a prison guard with a piece of porcelain

Selamaj brutally attacked a prison officer with a piece of porcelain after they went to investigate a commotion heard in his cell on May 8, 2023.

The killer managed to stab the officer in the right thigh and arm before more staff came to subdue the killer, one of which was punched in the face.

Selamaj will be sentenced in June for the prison assaults.

In September 2021, Miss Nessa had been on her way to meet a friend when Selemaj, who had lay in wait for around 20 minutes to select his 'prey for a violent sexual encounter', grabbed her from behind.

Selamaj, who had travelled from his home in Eastbourne to carry out the killing, beat her unconscious before she was dragged into an area of long grass and asphyxiated.

He then tried to conceal her body but it was found half-naked the following evening.

Selamaj admitted murder and in April 2022 Mr Justice Sweeney sentenced him to life with a minimum 36 years to be served.

Justice Sweeney warned that Selamaj, who 'cowardly' refused to attend his sentence hearing, may never be released.

Hours before the killing, Selamaj drove to his wife's workplace to ask her for sex, seeming 'very agitated'

The judge said at the time: 'Sabina Nessa was the wholly blameless victim of an absolutely appalling murder which was entirely the fault of the defendant - who has added to the sense of insecurity that people, particularly women, have living in our cities when walking or travelling alone, especially at night.'

Selamaj, 38, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court today, via video link to Broadmoor, where he admitted charges of wounding with intent, an offence which carries a life sentence, and assault on the prison staff.

Aidan Harvey, defending, said Selamaj is currently serving a 36-year term for the murder of Sabina Nessa.

Mr Harvey said Selamaj is currently in Broadmoor and psychiatric reports will be prepared before he is sentenced.

Broadmoor is a top-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire and has previously housed notorious inmates such as Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe and gangster Ronnie Kray.

Judge Stephen Earl said Selamaj will be sentenced after the preparation of reports and told him: 'I adjourn this case now for sentence in relation to these two matters until June 14 when you will appear as you are now, on the link.'

The killing of Sabina Nessa triggered a furious backlash when her half-naked body was discovered.

Politicians and campaignersbranded violence against women an 'epidemic' while others called for men to become 'allies' in the fight against misogynistic hate crime.

The shocking murder came after a number of high-profile femicides, including Sarah Everard, 33, who was snatched in London and killed by policeman Wayne Couzens on March 3 earlier that year.

Meanwhile sisters Nicole Smallman, 27, and Bibaa Henry, 46, were stabbed to death in a Wembley park by 19-year-old Danyal Hussein on June 6, 2020.

A year and a half later, it emerged that the Selmanj had been flagged to police just three days before he murderedher, but police chose not to investigate.

Selamaj had beaten and throttled his wife for months. After she left him, he took a room at her workplace.

Colleagues of the killer's estranged wife Ionela had called the 101 non-emergency number from the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, where she worked.

The 101 call on September 14 was prompted by Selamaj 'acting strangely' and refusing to pay for his stay at the five-star hotel.

But police did not attend. A call handler completed security checks on Selamaj but saw no reason for cops to show.
