Is Oh Henry discontinued? ›

The iconic bar, which contains peanuts, caramel, and fudge covered in milk chocolate, has had an historic run. But sadly, the Oh Henry! bar has been quietly discontinued by its current owner Ferrara.

One theory is that of a boy named Henry who frequented George Williamson's second candy shop. He became a favorite of the young girls who worked there, who would say "Oh Henry" when speaking to or about him, and Williamson used this phrase to name his new confection.

Baby Ruth and Oh Henry are very similar bars. In fact, I wonder which came first, because I think you could call it a case of a copy cat treat. Having said that, it is a formula that works, and I enjoy it a lot. The difference between the Baby Ruth and the Oh Henry is in the shape and name of the stuff in the middle.

The Oh Henry! has a thicker caramel layer, whereas the Snickers has a thicker nougat layer.

Sure enough, Warner-Lambert soon sold Oh Henry! to Terson, Inc., which in turn, sold it off to Nestle in the 1980s (Hershey owns the rights to the bar in Canada, but as noted earlier, uses a different recipe).

It is mistakenly believed to be named after the famous baseball player Hank Aaron. Oh Henry! is actually named for a young man named Henry who regularly visited the Williamson Candy Store.

His Curtiss Candy Company, based in Chicago, ran a contest to name the bar. At the time sportscasters began using the term “butterfingers” to describe players who couldn't hold onto the ball. A Chicago man who described himself as a klutz submitted the name “Butterfinger” for the bar and it was a winner.

Ruth's body was shown at the entrance of Yankee Stadium and thousands of fans came to pay their respects to Ruth.

Curtiss was purchased by Nabisco in 1981. In 1990, RJR Nabisco sold the Curtiss brands to Nestlé. Ferrero acquired Nestlé USA's confectionery brands, including Baby Ruth, in 2018. Ferrero folded production of the acquired brands into the Ferrara Candy Company.

Snickers was introduced by Mars in 1930 and named after the Mars family's favorite horse. Initially marketed as "Marathon" in the UK and Ireland, its name was changed to Snickers in 1990 to align with the global brand, differentiating it from an unrelated US product also named Marathon.

Legend has it that, Oh Henry! was originally named after an electrician who frequented the Williamson Candy Company, flirting with the girls who made the candy. The name is also said to be a homage to American writer O. Henry.

In 2018, Nestlé sold the rights to its US confectionery products to Ferrara Candy Company, a subsidiary of Ferrero SpA.

The bar was discontinued in 1979, although amazingly it retains a devoted fan base. "People loved that there was this whole mystery to it," Lacey said. "People are always going, 'Why won't they bring back the Seven Up bar?
