28 October 2022Barmbrack is a common IrishHalloweencustom. These cakes might be decorated on the top with animals or birds illustrated with icing or currants. The Halloween Brack traditionally contained various objects baked into the bread and was used as a sort offortune-tellinggame.In the cake were: a pea, a stick, a piece of cloth, a small coin (originally a silver sixpence), a ring, and a bean. Each item, when received in the slice, was supposed to carry a meaning to the person concerned:
- the pea, the person would not marry that year;
- the stick, would have an unhappy marriage or continually be in disputes;
- the cloth or rag, would have bad luck or be poor;
- the coin, would enjoy good fortune or be rich;
- the ring, would be wed within the year;
- and the bean, would have a future without money.
A medallion, usually of theVirgin Maryto symbolise taken a religious vocation is less common. Nowadays, a ring on its own is mostly used.
Barmbrack is sometimes called bairín breac. This may be from the Irish wordbairín- a loaf - andbreac- speckled (due to the raisins in it). Therefore, it means ‘a speckled loaf’.
Here is an excellent Barmbrack recipe: The perfect traditional Irish barmbrack – The Irish Times
Irish whiskey for use in the recipe is widely available in Germany. We recommend serving your Barmbrack warm with lots of Irish butter spread on top.
Enjoy and send us photos of your Barmbrack to @irlembberlin

Hier ist ein ausgezeichnetes Barmbrack-Rezept: The perfect traditional Irish barmbrack – The Irish Times
